Chrome extensions are a fantastic way to customise the functionality and behaviour of your browser to do just about anything.
In this episode I share 16 of my personal favourites, guaranteed to massively improve your workflow (and life).
16 essential chrome extensions to improve your workflow
Create short links from any web page with the click of a button. You can also customise the link to something more memorable.
I often share links to resources and I hate it when the URL is a big long string of characters. I think it looks messy and unprofessional and makes an email hard to read. For example I shared a zoom recording with a client the other day and the link had 139 characters and took up two lines of my email.
I used the bit.ly extension and condensed 139 down to 13 characters.
I can also customise the address to something memorable which is useful for links I share a lot (for example The KAM Club is bit.ly/thekamclub
They also have a free link-in-bio service which I use on Instagram.
Bitmoji is a highly customisable social avatar. The Chrome extension lets you use Bitmoji anywhere with a simple copy and paste. First you’ll need to create a Bitmoji account. Download the mobile app from bitmoji.com and create and customise your avatar. There are 1.9 million combinations so you can get your avatar to look just like you.
I use Bitmoji ALL the time:
- Make presentations fun.
- Visually represent my comments in social media posts and replies.
- Insert into emails for context.
Think of it as an alternative to gifs.
What makes Bitmoji better is that there is an avatar for every situation so it’s highly relevant and tailored. You can change your outfit to something more formal, like a suit to make it more professional. And bring some fun to your communication.
Business doesn’t have to be boring. Check out the flipbook of a presentation I made using Bitmoji's
(3) Dex Personal CRM
Dex is a personal relationship manager that reminds you to keep in touch with people you would otherwise forget. Easily visualize, organize, understand, and manage all your relationships for free.
Dex has been a gamechanger for me to help me engage with and nurture my network.
Turn Gmail into a collaboration tool to shorten the time to meaningful work. Turn your workflows into a visual powerhouse: choose between Kanban or list views, customize lists, color-code, sort, and filter.
If you live in your inbox, this is essential. I absolutely love how DragApp transforms Gmail into a project management app.
(5) Drift Video & Screen Recorder
Record video, screen, or both. Track views and chat live while they watch. Easily record and share videos that start conversations. Drift Video is the first and only screen recorder where you can chat directly from the videos you create.
I love how quick it is and that there are no recording limits on the free version (Loom, for example, caps you at 25 videos on the free plan). And the live chat feature is helpful if clients have questions while they watch.
Tired of too many extensions in your toolbar? Extensity quickly enables and disables chrome extensions. You can turn all extensions on and off with one click. Removes visual clutter and improves browser performance too.
I have so many extensions installed that my Toolbar was a mess. Extensity solved that problem. I have every extension enabled and pinned. And then turn them on and off via the extension as and when I need them.
(7) Giphy for Chrome
Search all the GIFs and Stickers from Giphy in one compact extension. They drag and drop or copy and paste. Couldn’t be easier. They also have a dedicated extension for Gmail.
I use Giphy for the same reason I use Bitmoji (see above). It brings an element of fun and context to your communication.
The simplest way to take a full page screenshot of your current browser window. Click on the extension icon (or press Alt+Shift+P), watch the extension capture each part of the page, and then download it as an image or PDF or even just drag it to your desktop.
It’s free, unless you want to edit/annotate in which it’s a bargain at USD$12 a year.
Full page screenshots are perfect when you're demonstrating features of your platform and want to point them out to clients.
(9) Keeper Password Manager & Digital Vault
Keeper is the most secure way to store your passwords and private information. Generate strong passwords, autofill and protect your confidential info with zero-knowledge encryption. You can also store and auto-fill your two-factor authentication codes.
I was suffering from password rage every time I had to try come up with a new version of my standard password. Also having the same or similar passwords is not secure.
Now I have over 500 logins for different sites and every single one has a unique password. Plus I can set my brother as an emergency contact so gives me peace of mind that my digital life can be managed by him if there's ever a need.
It’s only £30 a year, and you can get 30% off with this link.
(10) Save to Pocket
Pocket’s Chrome extension is the easiest, fastest way to capture articles, videos, and anything else you find on the web. With one click, the content you’ve collected appears across all your devices in a clean, distraction-free space—there to read when you’re ready, whether at home, at work, or on the go.
(11) RSS Reader Extension by Inoreader
With Inoreader, content comes to you, the minute it's available. Subscribe to RSS Feeds, Blogs, Podcasts, Twitter searches, Facebook pages, even Email Newsletters! Get unfiltered news feeds or filter them to your liking.
Use the RSS Reader extension by Inoreader to boost your productivity without leaving your current tab.
12 Scribe - Documentation, SOPs and Screenshots
Auto-generate step-by-step guides, just by clicking record. All you have to do is click “record” and go through the process you want to share. Scribe monitors your clicks and keystrokes to instantly create your guide.
Answer questions, build SOPs and train clients and teammates FAST.
(13) Shortcuts for Google
Choose from 1000+ Google shortcuts to show up as buttons in a space-saving popup. Reach any Google service in two clicks and customise with your favourite websites too.
This extension has saved me a lot of time.
With the Taskade extension for Chrome, capture your ideas and check off daily tasks and goals in one unified workspace. And you’ll be reminded of your goals every time you open a new browser tab.
I use this because I wanted a to-do list that was in my face every time I opened a new tab. Mission accomplished.
The free version is pretty great, but if you want all the bells and whistles, Taskade has a lifetime deal for only $59. It normally costs that for just one year on the Unlimited plan. Not sure how long it'll be around for, so apologies in advance if it's sold out by the time you read this.
(15) Tide - Focus Timer & White Noise
Tide offers you the best focus timer with natural white noise. Stay focused and increase productivity with Tide! Based on the Pomodoro Technique, Tide Focus Timer features a short break after a period of 25 minutes of focus time. This method has proven to improve overall efficiency.
Choose from five natural scenes: Ocean, rain, forest, muse and café. Also includes tracks time on websites to give you an accurate picture of your day and help you break bad browsing habits that waste time.
I use this app when I'm procrastinating. I tell myself 25 minutes is all I have to get through. Put on my headphones and press start. That little burst of productivity really kickstarts my motivation.
(16) Workona Tab Manager
Workona helps you get your work under control and finally feel organized. Use it to manage tabs, organize projects, and bring together all of your work in the browser.
Also install the Workona tab suspender extension to quickly free up memory on your machine. Perfect if you notice your machine is sluggish. I freed up 1.6GB of memory with one click (see below).
The Workona Tasks - Todo list & project manager extension allows you to manage tasks directly from your tabs. It's basic but does the job. I prefer Taskade for this (see number 14) because it has more functionality.
Use extension shortcuts
I had no idea until yesterday that you could open Chrome extensions with a keyboard shortcut!
Instead of opening the extensions menu every time, just setup up some shortcuts. Also means you don't have to pin extensions to your tool bar.
This article explains how set keyboard shortcuts for extensions in the Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Brave browsers.
